The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have.

Division

Research at the unit of Biochemical Toxicology aims to understand the connections between exposure to chemicals and carcinogenesis. The position is placed in the research group of Kristian Dreij at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, IMM. Dreij’s lab studies the occurrence and effects of transcriptional mutagenesis™. TM refers to mutations in RNA which can occur during transcription past DNA damages. The aim is to understand how TM affects proteins, cellular functions and the regulation of processes involved in development of diseases such as cancer.

Duties

Although the concept of TM is well known, the biological consequences are still under investigation. The project will study the effects of TM on protein function and cellular signaling important during cancer development. The post doc will primarily use molecular, cellular and microbiological methodologies relevant for studying nuclear morphology, genomic stability, and cellular signaling. The post doc will mainly perform laboratory-based work as well as analyze data, interpret and present the results, and write scientific articles. This project is conceptually novel and expected to have important consequences on our understanding of transcriptional fidelity, cancer development and aging.

Requirements

We are searching for a highly motivated postdoc who can work independently and develop his/her own ideas and visions. Candidates should be creative, and have strong communication skills. The ability to express oneself in speech and writing in English at a high level and interact effectively and work productively in a team will be considered important. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. from an appropriate discipline such as cell- or molecular biology with in depth understanding of transcription, DNA damage, cellular signaling and carcinogenesis.

Experience in relevant cell and molecular biology techniques for studying transcription, nuclear morphology and DNA damage signaling, such as vector construction and confocal microscopy is a merit.

Experience in studying cryptic splicing sites is a plus.

A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.

This is a temporary position for 1 year with possible extension, from autumn 2014….
