The Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute in Glasgow is one of Europe's leading cancer research centres. It supports cutting edge research into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. The Institute provides an outstanding research environment, underpinned by state-of-the-art core services and advanced technologies with special emphasis on imaging, metabolomics and proteomics.

Cell migration is fundamental to both cancer metastasis and healthy immunity. Specifically, cells move in a particular direction – they are steered. Cancer cells are directed out of tumours into local tissues or the bloodstream, while leukocytes only migrate into tissues when instructed to. However the mechanisms by which chemotactic gradients are formed, and the identities of the steering molecules for different tissues, have been unclear. We have recently discovered a new mechanism for generating chemotactic gradients, in which cells break down saturating attractants into local gradients (Muinonen-Martin, PLOSBiology 2014). We are also interested in the mechanisms through which these gradients control the cytoskeleton.

We now seek a postdoctoral cell biologist to extend this work or to develop a new programme in chemotaxis. Areas of focus will include high-resolution and time-lapse microscopy, enzyme assays and/or actin protein biochemistry.

A relevant PhD is essential. Experience in actin or protein biochemistry, cell biological and motility assays, fluorescence microscopy, cloning and genetics, and a good record of quality publications would be an advantage. You will have good knowledge of the literature, enthusiasm and flexibility to work on a wide range of techniques as needed
