The Position

Postdoctoral Fellowships at CSIRO provide opportunities to scientists and engineers, who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships will help launch their careers, provide experience that will enhance their career prospects, and facilitate the recruitment and development of potential leaders for CSIRO.

Postdoctoral Fellows are appointed for up to three years and will work closely with a leading Research Scientist or Engineer in their respective field. They carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO with the possibility of novel and important scientific outcomes. They present the findings in appropriate publications and at conferences.

Future Science Platforms (FSPs) are a major new CSIRO initiative. FSPs are multi-year investments in frontier science that will reinvent and create new industries for Australia. Digiscape is the FSP that is creating next-generation decision tools to transform the agriculture and land management sector. To achieve this aim, Digiscape will bring to bear cutting edge climate science; new sources of locally and remotely sensed data; informatics for agro-ecosystems; rigorous analysis of uncertainties; and innovation in both the ICT and social dimensions of systems integration. The successful candidate for this position will therefore join a cohort of early-career researchers and engineers who will combine their individual disciplinary contributions into mission-focussed R&D.

As part of Digiscape, this Postdoctoral Fellowship will implement and undertake research and work with stakeholders to increase the value of climate forecasts in the broader context of digital agriculture. We are looking for someone with a background in climate dynamics and the ability to engage with stakeholders. The Postdoctoral Fellow will work on innovative methods to ensure advances in climate forecasting lead to benefits for Australian Agriculture. The role will involve assessing the skill of climate forecasts in context of the needs of these user groups and, where relevant, running biophysical models.

The position offers the chance to work in a cross-disciplinary environment requiring an understanding of climate models and processes while appreciating the complexity and decision-based needs of the agricultural community. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be based within the Climate Decisions community in CSIRO Agriculture and Food in Hobart and will consult with teams across grain growing, great barrier reef protection, aquaculture, carbon balances, cotton and horticulture.

The project will be well resourced, with access to CSIRO’s stable of crop and other biophysical models, remote sensing, climate forecasting products and CSIRO digital architecture that warehouses much of this information. In addition, the position will have access to new techniques to compute model uncertainty, developed in other components of Digiscape. The fellow will be a team player and interact with scientists and technical staff within CSIRO, and colleagues from other institutions. Extension of outcomes in high impact scientific journals and at conferences will be expected. The fellow will be guided/mentored by a multidisciplinary team of scientists and technical experts from the Digiscape team.
