The Position

Postdoctoral Fellowships at CSIRO provide opportunities to scientists and engineers, who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships will help launch their careers, provide experience that will enhance their career prospects, and facilitate the recruitment and development of potential leaders for CSIRO.

Postdoctoral Fellows are appointed for up to three years and will work closely with a leading Research Scientist or Engineer in their respective field. They carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO with the possibility of novel and important scientific outcomes. They present the findings in appropriate publications and at conferences.

In this role, you will be a part of the Health and Biosecurity team at CSIRO but will also be affiliated with the Centre for Tropical Biodiversity and Climate Change at JCU. You will have a lead role in developing novel analytical pathways to derive fine scale spatial and temporal resolution models of large introduced herbivores (pig, Sus scrofa, cattle, Bos indicus and buffalo, Bubalus bubalis). Working with CSIRO Data61 researchers, you will utilise CSIRO’s sensor cloud to access continuous data from environmental and GPS tracking sensors and use advanced modelling methods to better understand seasonal resource use and movement.

Specifically, you will:

* Improve management of feral animals through the use of spatial ecological modelling that integrates existing knowledge and suitability and connectivity models with environmental sensor data and movement data from pigs, cattle and buffalo.

* Work with 3 indigenous ranger organisations in Arnhem Land and Cape York Peninsula to develop suitable visualisation of results and to support strategic planning for feral animal control using the results of high resolution models.

* With assistance initiate the inception, planning and preparation of research proposals and carry out investigations requiring originality, creativity and innovation.

* Present results in a meaningful format, prepare reports for clients and write scientific papers for publication in high-impact journals.

* Ensure end-user impact, including through the development of deep stakeholder relationships.
