Job Title:  Bacterial phylogenetics and pathogenomics Job Number:  4014674 Date Posted:  07/21/2014 Application Deadline: 9/15/2014 Job Description The proposed research is on the phylogenetic analysis of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), the causative organism of Johne's disease (JD). JD is a debilitating, incurable, chronic enteritis in ruminants that is of great economic impact to the Dairy industry. Our collection of >1000 MAP isolates from dairy herds and >200 (and counting) whole genome sequences has provided us a wealth of information regarding the diversity and phylogeny of MAP in Canada. A PDF with advanced skills in bioinformatics and molecular microbiology will use the epidemiological metadata accompanying the large amounts of genomic data to answer questions related to transmission dynamics, immune responses and pathogenesis. SNPs will be studied that lead to the generation of major clades in the phylogenetic trees to discover reasons for increased transmission potential and virulence. Experimental confirmation of pathophenotypes can be performed using macrophage infections, cytokine measurements, kinomics and in vivo infection models. This project can either lean over to the phylogenetic, molecular epidemiological or molecular microbiology side, but ideally would become a combination of all three.
