In Situ Characterization Postdoc
Los Alamos National Laboratory
Los Alamos, New Mexico
The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies in Materials Physics and Applications Division (MPA-CINT) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral candidate to join the team. We will rely on you to develop novel in situ transmission electron and optical microscopy, scattering, and spectroscopy techniques to study the effects of mechanical strain on physical properties of inorganic materials focusing on thermal and electrical transport mechanisms.
The projects span several areas, including characterizing the effect of uniaxial and biaxial strain in creating localized defect emission sites in 2D materials in order to enable strategies for next-generation single photon sources required for all-optical quantum communication technologies. These experiments are conducted with a suite of capabilities, including confocal photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopes, and the CINT Integration Laboratory (a class 100 cleanroom).
The successful candidate will contribute to a one-of-a-kind collaborative environment consisting of accomplished scientists in electrothermal physics, nanomaterials, ultrafast optical spectroscopy, and in situ electron microscopy.
Requirements:
• Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related discipline within the past five years (or soon to be completed)
• A strong record of publication
• An experimental background in electron microscopy, nanofabrication, or ultrafast optical spectroscopy with a focus on in situ characterization technique development
• Demonstrated ability to work creatively and independently in collaboration with large interdisciplinary research teams
Desired Skills:
• Experience with in situ transmission electron microscopy, including low-dose phase contrast, low-doseSTEM, scanning nano beam electron diffraction algorithm technique development, and electrical biasing sample holders
• Experience operating and maintaining ultrafast optical spectroscopic systems, micro-Raman/photoluminescence systems (Horiba LabRAM HR Evolution or custom Princeton Instruments-based systems), and complex ultrafast amplified laser systems
• Proficiency in NI LabView, Wolfram Mathematica, or similar program for computer-controlled data acquisition and analysis (Keithley low-level precision instruments)
