Postdoc Fellow--Rodent Operant Behavior, Optogenetics, In vivo Fiber Photometry, Patch-Clamp, and Drug Addiction: Bryan, TX, United States
Two NIH-funded postdoctoral positions are available to investigate synaptic and circuit mechanisms of alcohol addiction. Research in the lab utilizes state-of-the-art technologies, including operant alcohol self-administration, in vivo and ex vivo dual-channel optogenetics (see our recent paper, https://www.nature.com/articles/s41593-018-0081-9 ) and chemogenetics(DREADDs, see
http://www.biologicalpsychiatryjournal.com/article/S0006-3223(16)32420-9/fulltext), whole-cell patch-clamp recording in genetically identified neurons (e.g., tdTomato-labeled dopamine D1 or D2 receptor-expressing striatal neurons), and analysis of neuronal structural plasticity using confocal imaging and 3-D reconstruction in combination with behavioral procedures (e.g., operant self-administration of alcohol). We are seeking a behavioral scientist and an electrophysiologist who are highly motivated. The successful electrophysiological candidate will have proven proficiency in slice electrophysiology and will study circuit-specific alterations and reversion of striatal glutamatergic transmission in alcohol abuse. Ability to measure glutamatergic plasticity in acute slices using whole-cell patch-clamp recording is desired. The successful behavioral candidate will have trackable records on operant self-administration, in vivo optogenetic stimulation, and/or in vivo fiber photometry measurement. Ability to stereotaxically infuse virus in rats and/or mice is preferred. Experience with optogenetics, chemogenetics, or immunohistochemistry, confocal imaging is a big plus. The successful applicants are expected to have a recent PhD degree in neuroscience, strong communication skills and writing ability, a record of scientific productivity, and a desire to work independently and cooperatively with a team.
The laboratory is equipped with Zeiss microscope/imaging systems, Axon MultiClamp 700B amplifiers/data acquisition systems, Leica Vibratome, Optogenetic laser/LED sources, KOPF stereotaxic infusion system, Coulburn operant self-administration chambers, a fiber photometry system, etc. Several common facilities are available within the new building that contains electrophysiological, molecular and behavioral labs.

About the institution: The Texas A&M Health Science Center is the only health science center in the Texas A&M University system that contains 11 universities. The Bryan-College Station campus of the Health Science Center are located in beautiful towns that are in a short drive to three major Texas cites — Houston (1.5 hrs), Austin (2 hrs) and Dallas (3 hrs). This vicinity provides not only an easy access to big-city life, but also less traffic and cheaper housing. Within this campus, there is a large group of neuroscience laboratories, some of which study drug abuse. The department of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics is located in a new building of the Bryan campus, which provides a really nice working environment.
