Job description:
The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics, thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
The section Physical Oceanography of Polar Seas invites applications for a sea-going
Post-Doc position for Arctic Ocean mixing and nutrient fluxes
Background:
The decline of Arctic Ocean seasonal sea ice cover over the past two decades is a major indicator of polar climate change. Over the same period satellite observations have implied that net primary productivity has increased by at least 30%. However, the increased production exceeds expectations in ecosystem response to the declining sea ice, and the consequent lengthening of the ice-free season. One of the important scientific questions regarding coupled physical and biological processes evolves around the changes in vertical mixing and nutrient fluxes and their role in the future Arctic ecosystem, and will be the focus of this position.
Tasks:
You will measure and investigate turbulent mixing processes and nutrient fluxes in the Arctic Ocean. The position entails participation in research expeditions to carry out the required oceanographic measurements, including during one leg of the MOSAiC-drift aboard the research icebreaker RV Polarstern. The position is strongly interdisciplinary and you will be based at the Physical Oceanography-section at AWI and is expected to interact closely with AWI-biogeochemists. The position is part of a NERC/BMBF-funded project and embedded within a UK-German collaboration, which provides great opportunities to grow within the international Arctic science community by participating in bilateral meetings and international conferences. The position requires expedition preparation and participation, data generation and processing, scientific analysis and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Requirements:
You should hold a PhD degree in physical oceanography or related fields. A broad background in Arctic Oceanography, ocean turbulence and very good programming skills in Matlab are required. The successful accomplishment of the project goals ideally demands practical experience in measuring turbulence in the ocean using Microstructure profilers as well as experience with turbulence data processing. You must have a proven interest in interdisciplinary research, and the desire to work at the interface between oceanography and ecosystem. You should further have a proven record of subject-relevant first-author publications. A very good command of English in writing and speaking (corresponding to level B2/C1) and the willingness to interact with an interdisciplinary science community are mandatory.
For more information or questions regarding the project please contact Dr. Markus Janout (markus.janout@awi.de) or Dr. Sinhue Torres-Valdes (sinhue.torres-valdes@awi.de).
The position is expected to start in July 1st 2018 and is limited to 34 months. Funding of the project and this advertised position is subject to final approval by the German BMBF.The salary will be paid in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes (TVöD Bund), salary level 13. The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.
We offer you a multi-disciplinary, international, and professional environment with flexible working hours, state-of-the-art research equipment, and a first-rate infrastructure. AWI aims to increase the number of women in the scientific staff and therefore encourages women to apply. Disabled applicants will be given preference when equal qualifications are present. The AWI fosters the compatibility of work and family through various means. Because of our engagement in the area of work-life compatibility we have been awarded the certificate “Career and Family”.
Please forward your applications with the standard documentation (cover letter with motivation, CV and two references / letters of recommendation) by May 15th, 2018 referencing code 71/D/Kli to: Alfred-Wegener-Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung, Personalabteilung (human resources), Postfach 120161, 27515 Bremerhaven/Germany or by e-mail (all documents merged into one PDF file) to: personal@awi.de.
