*Research Assistant £25,728 - £29,799
Research Associate £29,799 - £38,833
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance.
A Research Assistant/Associate is sought to work on an ongoing 3-year EU Horizon 2020 project, Advanced Superconducting Motor Experimental Demonstrator (ASuMED, asumed.oswald.de). This project seeks to develop a fully superconducting motor prototype suited to future electric aircraft. The Research Assistant/Associate will work in the Applied Superconductivity and Cryoscience Group (ASCG) in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy which is a core partner and one of 10 partners in the project consortium. Other partners include Oswald Elektromotoren, Rolls-Royce and Karsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT).
The role of ASCG in the project is to develop superconducting composite permanent magnets (SCPMs) as rotor field poles for motors and demonstrate their feasibility in a prototype test rig. The magnets take the form of stacks of high temperature superconducting (HTS) tape which once magnetised, produce a persistent high magnetic field. This will allow their integration into a fully superconducting prototype to be designed and built by the consortium as a whole in addition to the smaller test rig in Cambridge.
There is some flexibility in the aspects of the project that the candidate will contribute to, but the key components will be experimental work in the assembly and running of the superconducting motor test rig in Cambridge and finite element modelling of high temperature superconducting materials in magnetic fields. Training can be given in certain additional areas.
The candidate is expected to have a PhD in a relevant subject by the start date or shortly after, and the ideal candidate will have experience of two or more of the following topics gained during PhD or postdoctoral work
Fabrication or application of HTS tape gained in an academic or commercial environment
FEM multiphysics modelling of electromagnetism
Design and construction of measurement systems including electronics and software development
Cryogenics
Superconducting magnets/coils
The candidate must be an excellent team member as they will be required to work closely with three other postdoctoral researchers on the project and related research. They will attend project meetings in Europe, and international conferences. They will have the opportunity for significant interaction with industrial partners.
