Short summary
A postdoctoral research post in a new joint project between the laboratories of Jean Langhorne and Dinis Calado is now available. We are looking for a highly motivated researcher to use mouse models to investigate mechanisms that may underlie the association of malaria infection and the development of endemic Burkitt’s lymphoma (eBL). The Malaria Immunology Laboratory, headed by Dr Langhorne, studies the immune response to the malaria parasite, including the components involved in protection from infection and those that contribute to Malaria induced pathology, as well as, the molecules of the parasite that stimulate these responses. The immunity and Cancer Laboratory, headed by Dr Calado, investigates the interdependencies between immune cellular development, infection and the development of malignancies from those cells, with specific focus on B cell malignancies.
Project scope
This infection/cancer interdisciplinary project has its foundation on the known association between Malaria infection and the development of endemic Burkitt’s lymphoma (eBL), a childhood cancer that is prevalent in equatorial Africa. Despite the association between Malaria and eBL being known for more than 50 years, the mechanistic basis remains poorly defined. This project aims to identify mechanisms underlying such an association building on the complementary expertise of the Malaria Immunology and the Immunity and Cancer laboratories at the Francis Crick Institute.
The successful applicant will use a wide range of techniques such as Plasmodium parasitology, genetics, B-cell immunology, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence and transcriptomics to investigate B-cell response and germinal centre responses making using of a wide variety of transgenic, knock-in and knock-out mouse models and a rodent model of malaria. The successful applicant will have an excellent track record, and skills in B-cell immunology and mouse models, good communication and organisational skills and a PhD in a relevant area (or be in the final stages of completion).
About us
The Francis Crick Institute is a biomedical discovery institute dedicated to understanding the fundamental biology underlying health and disease. Its work is helping to understand why disease develops and to translate discoveries into new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, infections, and neurodegenerative diseases.
An independent organisation, its founding partners are the Medical Research Council (MRC), Cancer Research UK, Wellcome, UCL (University College London), Imperial College London and King’s College London.
The Crick was formed in 2015, and in 2016 it moved into a new state-of-the-art building in central London which brings together 1500 scientists and support staff working collaboratively across disciplines, making it the biggest biomedical research facility under in one building in Europe.
The Francis Crick Institute will be world-class with a strong national role. Its distinctive vision for excellence includes commitments to collaboration; developing emerging talent and exporting it the rest of the UK; public engagement; and helping turn discoveries into treatments as quickly as possible to improve lives and strengthen the economy.
