Postdoctoral fellow within “intermediate band solar cells” (MBE growth of dilute-N III-V quantum dot materials)

The Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering  at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a 100 % position as a postdoctoral fellow at Department of Electronics and Telecommunications (IET).

The appointment is for a term of up to 3 years. The position of postdoctoral fellow is a fixed-term position with the primary objective of qualifying for work in top academic posts.

Information about the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications

Currently the Department employs 19 professors, 15 adjunct professors/associate professors, 65 PhD students and 9 post doctors/scientists. The Department has the principal responsibility for education and research in electronics at NTNU. The Department encompasses research and education within the areas of circuit and systems design, radio systems, electro optics, electronic devices and materials, acoustics and signal processing.

Work description

A postdoctoral fellowship (duration up to 3 years) is offered for work within Molecular Beam Epitaxial (MBE) growth of III-V and dilute-N III-V based semiconductor quantum dot structures for intermediate band solar cells. The work is part of a project entitled “High Efficiency Quantum Dot Intermediate Band Solar Cells (HighQ-IB)” and is financed by The Research Council of Norway. The aim of the project is to enable growth of high quality quantum dot samples suitable for the realization of high efficiency intermediate band solar cells. The work will be performed at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications and at the Department of Physics (IFY), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology

The quantum dot samples will be fabricated using MBE, characterised using several characterization techniques and processed into solar cells, and the successful candidate will be involved in all these tasks. The successful candidate will be part of the solar cell physics group at NTNU, and work closely with Post docs, PhD students and others at the Department of Physics and at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications and research scientists at SINTEF.

We seek a highly motivated individual holding a PhD degree in physics (specialized in semiconductor physics), physical electronics or other relevant disciplines. The candidate must document experience in semiconductor/nano materials research and must have extensive experience with MBE growth and UHV systems, and material characterization techniques, including RHEED, AFM, HR-XRD, SEM and PL. In particular, the successful candidate is required to have expertise in MBE growth of III-V (preferably InGaAs/AlGaAs) quantum dots, and a thorough understanding of MBE growth mechanisms and semiconductor quantum dots. Applicants with no experience in quantum dot growth by MBE will not be considered for the position. Experience from growth and characterization of III-V dilute nitrides (GaNAs, AlGaNAs, InGaNAs etc) is an advantage. Experience from clean room processing of devices is an added advantage. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintenance of the MBE facility. The candidate must be interested in team work.

Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English

(CPE). Minimum scores are:

TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)

IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)

CAE/CPE: grade B or A.

Qualifications

A requirement is a Norwegian doctoral degree in the subject area concerned or a corresponding doctoral degree from a country outside Norway recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree or competence at a corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality.

Salary conditions

The position is in code 1352 Post doctor, salary grade 57 in the Norwegian State salary scale, gross NOK 482 500 per year. A deduction of 2% is made as a statutory contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
