A postdoctoral associate position is available in the McHugh Lab in the Department of Bioengineering at Rice University (Houston, TX). The McHugh Lab is focused on the rational development of drug delivery platforms that release proteins (e.g. vaccines, immunotherapy) to leverage the intrinsic capacity of the human immune system to fight disease. The lab’s research focuses on developing technologies that improve therapeutic outcomes, increase patient compliance, and minimize negative side effects. By leveraging control over polymer degradation characteristics and microscale device architecture, the McHugh Lab seeks to establish platform technologies with full control over the spatiotemporal release of potent biologics. The McHugh Lab is located in the BioSciences Research Collaborative (BRC) building at the interface of Rice University and the Texas Medical Center. As such, it is uniquely positioned to pursue translational research with the goal of moving devices into the clinic as quickly as possible.

The ideal candidate will be creative, highly motivated, and have a passion for performing translational research. The selection process will place a strong emphasis on creative thinking and the ability to communicate with a multidisciplinary team. Candidates must have a PhD in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, immunology, or a related field and a history of peer-reviewed publication. Those with expertise in polymer synthesis, bioorthogonal chemistry, photo-responsive materials, soft lithography, adaptive immunity, and/or in vivo study design are especially encouraged to apply, though those skills are not required. This is a one-year position with the expectation of being renewed annually pending satisfactory performance. Applicant evaluation will begin immediately.
