Job Description

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to join the Plastics Laboratory R&D Team conducting research in support of projects related to nuclear weapons, global security, and national security. Are you passionate about performing multidisciplinary synthetic work with a team of scientists, engineers, and technologists? If so, you will want to consider applying for this opportunity to become a key contributor to chemical synthetic efforts on our dynamic team. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Gain and utilize technical depth to contribute to research areas, including:

- synthesis, characterization, and development of novel organic, inorganic, polymer, and nanomaterials and chemistries

- understanding polymer materials and processes used in various nuclear weapon components

- evaluating and developing functional and structural materials for mission-relevant application areas + Partner with a dynamic team of authorities in other fields including organic materials and advanced materials, to provide an understanding of physical and chemical phenomena of novel materials + Probe and answer specific questions related to the use of these materials in critical applications + Perform all duties in compliance with operational safety, security and quality guidelines

Required:

+ You have, or are pursuing a PhD in chemistry, materials science or related discipline, plus you have a bachelor’s in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) + You have a record of publications as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences + Your experience includes laboratory techniques related to synthetics + Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Desired:

+ PhD in synthetic chemistry + Experience with air-free techniques such as Schlenk lines, gloveboxes, and vacuum apparatuses + Experience in the preparation and purification of organic/inorganic molecular compounds, nanomaterials, and polymers + Your background includes working with radioactive materials + Knowledge, understanding, and experience in a plethora of synthetic materials characterization techniques including multinuclear NMR, TEM, SEM, TGA/DSC, UV-Vis, PXRD, and SCXRD + Demonstrated capability to produce creative solutions for chemically-relevant problems + Good documentation and organizational skills as shown by publications and conference presentations

Department Description:

The department mission is to support Sandia programs by providing materials and processing expertise and prototype fabrication capabilities for a wide variety of polymer applications. We practice concurrent engineering with designers who are involved in the application of thermosetting, thermoplastic, and composite materials. We routinely use these materials to join, package, and provide structural members to satisfy demanding electrical, mechanical and environmental design requirements. This department also provides a wide range of analytical support. We do fundamental research on adhesion, support the stress and fracture mechanics modeling efforts with experiments, perform emergency production when necessary, and work with our customers to find the right material for the job.

Security Clearance:
