Postdoctoral researcher/Senior researcher fixed-term position

The University of Turku is a world-class multidisciplinary research university which offers interesting challenges and a unique vantage point to national and international research and education. Postdoctoral researcher / senior researcher position in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Turku The fixed-term position starts latest on January 1st 2021 and ends on August 31st 2024. The tasks of the researcher are related to the research project titled "Statistical Interpretation of Core-Hole Transitions" funded by the Academy of Finland. In this interdisciplinary physics - data science project we study X-ray spectroscopy of soft condensed matter and gaseous systems. The researcher will develop analysis tools and apply them to data obtained by supercomputer simulations for X-ray spectra. The research project offers an exciting opportunity to solve a recently identified, widely present and highly relevant scientific problem. The researcher will work in a spectroscopy group and carry out research as outlined in the project plan. In addition, minor teaching duties can be assigned to the researcher. The position offers versatile opportunities for development as a creative problem solver. The host group also offers an open-minded and supportive environment for the researcher to succeed in the task. We encourage the researcher to expand their skills in programming, data analysis and X-ray spectroscopy. Moreover the researcher has an opportunity to take university pedagogic courses. The successful researcher is creative, perseverant, careful and a good team- worker.

Especially we look for a canditate who has - EITHER experience in X-ray spectroscopy and molecular simulation OR experience in statistical data analysis and machine learning (experience in all of these is a great advantage) - skills in scientific programming and enthusiasm to apply and develop these skills - a track record in which the role of data analysis and scientific programming can be clearly identified - a good command of scientific English The qualification requirements of the position are written in the University of Turku rules of procedure. A person selected for the post of postdoctoral researcher is required to have a doctoral degree which must be completed by the end of the application period. Applicant whose doctoral degree will be completed later in 2020 may be hired as a senior researcher. The researcher will be chosen based on a written application and on an interview. The salary is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel. The salary is at levels 4-6 on the job demands chart, where the task specific salary component is 2563,09–3460,91 euro per month. In addition, a personal work performance component will be paid. The personal work performance component is 6 % - 50 % of the task specific salary component. There is a trial period of three months. The application consists of a CV (including the list of publications), a copy of the doctoral diploma (or description when the degree will be completed; in case senior researcher position is applied for), and an application letter (max 2 pages), in which the applicant describes their experience in programming and data analysis, in machine learning, in X-ray spectroscopy and in molecular simulations. A convincing description of how these contributions are present in the applicant’s publications will be considered a great advantage. The hesitating applicant is reminded that due to the interdisciplinary nature of the project, the researcher is not expected to be an expert in all of the fields listed above.However, reasonable skills in scientific programming are essential for success in the task.
