The School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering is a multi- disciplinary centre of research and education located in the heart of London's vibrant design community. It is proud of its research advances and of educating thousands of undergraduates and postgraduates in STEM subjects.

The Centre for Compressor Technology is a research group within the Thermo- Fluids Research Centre at the School. We are seeking to appoint Howden/Royal Academy of Engineering Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on the project "Smart Efficient Compression: Reliability and Energy Targets (SECRET)", funded by Royal Academy of Engineering and Howden Compressors. It involves research into improving efficiency and reliability of oil free rotary positive displacement machines by experimental and numerical means and building prototypes of novel smart, reliable and efficient machines.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work closely in the project with the Howden/RAEng Chair in Compressor Technology and other participants. The project will offer an environment for submitting research proposals. They candidate will be responsible for conducting experimental, analytical and computational studies on rotary positive displacement machines with particular focus on conjugate heat transfer in leakage gaps of these machines.

Other areas of contribution will be in research administration, dissemination of research findings to conferences, journals and funding bodies, protection of IP and commercialisation activities and some limited teaching.

Person Specification

The post holder should have a relevant PhD in Mechanical Engineering, preferably in positive displacement rotary machines. They should have experience in research in the areas of numerical and experimental methods in thermal power systems. A good understanding of solid fluid interaction in rotating machinery is required. Prior experience in modelling and experimental work on rotary machines is desirable.
