The Medical Research Council Toxicology Unit, located at the University of Leicester, is an internationally renowned institution delivering field-changing mechanistic insights into toxicology and disease. The Unit is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and offers excellent opportunities for postdoctoral training.
We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic postdoctoral scientist to join the Gain of Function of Mutant p53 group, led by Dr Patrica Muller, to work on projects investigating the role of mutant p53 in chemo-resistance and invasion of cancer cells. It is expected that this will lead to publications in high impact journals. Mutations in the p53 gene can lead to the expression of a mutant p53 protein. This mutant protein has lost the tumour-protective p53 wild type function and has gained novel functions in promoting tumorigenesis. These functions comprise increased chemoresistance, enhanced motility and invasion and increased proliferation. Copper is required for invasion and can change the sensitivity of cells to chemotoxic drugs. In this project we will determine the intracellular mechanisms that are responsible for this and we will determine the role of copper in invasion and chemoresistance of mutant p53 tumours.
This is a Postdoctoral Training Scientist position providing training and development supporting post-doctoral scientist in early or changed career paths helping establish them as successful research scientists in their chosen field. During the fellowship tenure we are committed to provide mentorship for career development and improvement of communication skills.
Candidates should have significant knowledge of cell biology and oncology and an interest in working on the molecular mechanisms leading to chemo-resistance and/or invasion. Experience in cell culture techniques, transfections, biochemistry approaches, cloning, in vitro assays and cell toxicity assays is required. Knowledge in RNA work and protein work is desirable.
Although not required, suitable candidates will be highly encouraged to apply for (inter)national funding in the first year of employment as part of their independent career training for which sufficient help is available within the unit.
Allowances include a £1,000 lump sum Settlement payment plus an annual training allowance of £850 in the first year increasing to £1,300 in year two, and £1,800 in the third and final years (paid monthly but not consolidated for pension purposes).
