Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Urban Climate Action

The University of British Columbia (UBC)

In collaboration with the University Climate Change Coalition (UC3), we are offering a UC3 Fellowship to work on climate action initiatives at UBC, advance coalition-wide activities, and learn from other fellows in the program. As a UC3 fellow, you will be hosted by Mérida Labs at UBC, and you will be responsible for the project described below. However, you will also have the opportunity to participate in collaborative, multi-disciplinary projects relevant to the entire UC3 network. These coalition projects could include virtual community development (with other fellows in the program), sharing best practices across universities, coordination of workshops or events to present project outcomes, development of large-scale proposals, visits to other campuses and communities, or development of publications and guidebooks. Suitable candidates will have the opportunity to work with civil society, industry, academia and multiple levels of government to develop strategies aimed at impactful climate action.

UBC Project

Cities around the world are setting very ambitious climate targets, and achieving these targets will require transformational changes in how we live, work, commute, and build. It will take the best efforts of all sectors of society, including the academic sector, to develop and implement the detailed plans, policies and partnerships needed to achieve such goals. UBC has reduced greenhouse gas emissions reductions of more than 33 per cent below 2007 levels, with simultaneous growth in student population (26%) and new construction (16%). At Mérida Labs we develop and integrate new technologies and systems into city-scale solutions that use the campus as a testbed. Under such initiatives, UBC Vancouver functions as a small municipality, and becomes a risk-tolerant, early adopter of new climate solutions. One of the main objectives of this projects is to connect UBC’s best practices and research capabilities to the climate action plans in cities and regions in North America. More specifically, as a UC3 fellow, you will

•Develop a techno-economic model for the GHG emissions in our Vancouver campus, including decision-making tools that incorporate carbon pricing explicitly.

•Review climate strategies and priorities of the neighbouring region, cities and communities to identify linkages to UBC research

•Work with UBC partnership development staff, identify research areas that align with city and community climate goals and develop research project proposals

•Develop impact measurement monitoring and reporting framework on the impact of UBC research on the climate goals of the city/community

•Assist with the supervision of graduate and undergraduate students

•Assist in the development of partnerships and funding applications

•Publish your findings in the relevant scientific journals, conferences, etc.

We are looking for a well-rounded researcher with interdisciplinary experience and excellent communication skills. All relevant disciplines will be considered, but a suitable candidate must have technical experience in one or more of the following areas of study:

1. Techno-economic modelling 2. Mixed integer linear programing (MILP)

3. Multi-period optimization frameworks for cost-optimization

4. Carbon intensity factors

5. Life Cycle Analysis

6. Global, national or regional energy policies and economic instruments 7. Carbon taxes

8. GHG emissions trading (Cap-and-Trade & Baseline-and-Credit)

9. Low carbon fuel standard (LCFS)

10. Feed-in Tariff or premiums

11. Production tax credits

12. Renewable Energy Certificates

13. Capital subsidies, etc.

14. Urban climate action and city planning 15. Resilience and coastal adaptation

16. Integrated energy planning

17. Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

18. Climate action plan implementation

19. Multi-stakeholder engagement processes

The fellowship will be for a one-year appointment, renewable, subject to a performance assessment. The position is available from now until it is filled. Review of applications will begin on January 30th, 2021 and will continue until the position is filled. The research will be interdisciplinary and interested candidates with a PhD in Science, Engineering, Political Science, Geophysics, Urban Planning, Mapping or related fields completed within the last 3 years are encouraged to apply.
