As this vacancy has limited funding the maximum salary that can be offered is Grade 6, salary £30,046.

Part Time (40%FTE) FTC for 5 months

Summary of Role

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to join the Biomedical Engineering Research Group, in the School of Engineering, at the University of Birmingham. The successful applicant will join Dr Lauren Thomas-Seale's (Principal Investigator) dynamic and ambitious research team, in collaboration with the Co-Investigator, Dr Rosemary Dyson (School of Maths). The Research Associate will undertake research, sponsored by the EPSRC, to develop novel design techniques for additive manufacturing. Project objectives include: - Characterisation of AM platforms - Validation of novel AM software

Candidates are required to have a first degree in engineering, mathematics or computer science. Candidate must be near to completing a PhD in engineering. Candidates will be required to have experience in engineering design and have the ability to work across interdisciplinary subjects.

The post will be available 40%FTE from 1st May to 30th Sept 2021.

Main Duties

The responsibilities of the position include but are not exclusive to:

• Collect research data; this will be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews • Analyse and interpret data • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars, etc. • Undertake management/administration arising from research • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required • Work within the specified research grant and related-projects and contribute to writing future funding bids • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines • Work closely with researchers within the research group and in other disciplines • Be an active member of the research group, contributing to communal lab tasks

Person Specification

The following skills and experience are required. Please note that this is a comprehensive list and outstanding candidates will be considered who satisfy some but not all of these points.

• Relevant undergraduate (and postgraduate) degree(s) in engineering, maths or computer science • Research experience in engineering design, preferably related to additive manufacturing • Possess sufficient breadth and depth of specialist and transferable knowledge • Experience of publishing in peer reviewed journals • Experience of presenting research at meetings and conferences • Excellent communication skills • Ability to work as part of a highly multidisciplinary team
