Postdoctoral Researcher In Environmental Medicine – Elucidating The Role Of The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor In Toxicology Vs. Physiology

Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

The mission at the Unit of Systems Toxicology is to perform top quality research to understand how different environmental exposures affect human wellbeing, focusing on the impact of chemicals and microbes on epithelial barrier function and immunity. We work with experimental and bioinformatics models and methods, including cells, zebrafish, and different omics analysis. We are now recruiting a Post Doc who will work with Senior Researcher Emma Wincent in a collaborative project related to the impact of chemical exposure on intestinal homeostasis.

The project is centered upon delineating detrimental vs. beneficial functions of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), with a particular focus on intestinal barrier integrity. Specifically, you will investigate how xenobiotic chemicals interfere with beneficial functions of the AHR on intestinal stem cell differentiation, using recombinant enzymes, colon organoid cultures, and tissue extracts. The project is performed as a collaboration with the research group led by BrigittaStockinger at the Francis Crick Institute in London, and you are expected to participate in joint research tasks throughout the project period. The position is temporary for two years.

Your profile

We are looking for an ambitious, highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a solid background in experimental cell biology and/or toxicology. Experience in cell culturing is required. Previous work with enzyme kinetics, chemical exposure and effect analysis, including techniques such as HPLC, qPCR, transcriptomics and metabolomics data analysis is preferable, and experience in organoid cultures and stem cell differentiation can be meritorious. The candidate must be able to work within a team with scientists from different disciplines and fluency in English, both written and oral, is a requirement.

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
