We are seeking a Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow in Evidence Synthesis with exceptional analytical and communication skills to join a cohesive research team working on evidence synthesis to answer major policy questions concerning the effective use of drugs, devices, procedures, diagnostics, public health programmes and other health interventions.

The Southampton Health Technology Assessments Centre (SHTAC) is a centre of excellence for HTA, with expertise in finding, reviewing and synthesising clinical evidence and in the use of decision modelling and health economics to appraise benefits for patients and value for the National Health Service. We are one of nine Technology Assessment Review (TAR) teams contracted to provide independent and objective reports for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). We also have an active programme of other research, including cost-effectiveness analysis in the context of clinical trials, data analysis and modelling.

SHTAC is part of the Wessex Institute, in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton. Working as part of the evidence synthesis team on projects for NICE, you will: undertake systematic review tasks (e.g. screening references for inclusion; extract data and critically appraise evidence) write reports and interact with NICE staff, committees, and other stakeholders. The Senior Research Fellow will line manage and supervise staff, lead/co-ordinate NICE and other research projects, and lead the development of research proposals.

You will have good knowledge of, and/or demonstrable skills in conducting systematic reviews (e.g. screening references, extracting data from studies, literature search methods, quality assessment and risk of bias of evidence, data synthesis (e.g. meta-analysis and network meta-analysis) and analysing results. Excellent IT knowledge/skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and bibliographic reference management software will be required. In addition to technical knowledge and skills, you will be a good writer, work effectively in a team and communicate well.

You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a relevant discipline (health technology assessment/epidemiology/public health/health promotion). You will be encouraged and supported to develop your knowledge, skills, and research interests, to publish high quality research reports and papers and to present findings at local, national and international conferences and meetings. Opportunities for further training are encouraged and supported.

Appointment will be made on one of the following scales: Research Fellow - £30,942 – £38,017 and Senior Research Fellow - £39,152 - £49,553 according to experience.
