In the Renthal lab, we aim to build better pain therapeutics. Our lab approaches this important problem using molecular, systems, and behavioral approaches to characterize unique features of nociceptors that can be used to design more selective pain medications. We are seeking highly motivated and insatiably curious applicants to help us explore exciting NIH-funded projects with a clear eye on their translational potential. For example, we recently generated single-cell gene expression atlases from mouse and human sensory ganglia and are particularly interested in the function of genes that are preferentially expressed in nociceptors. We are also characterizing the epigenomic mechanisms that underlie cell-type-specific gene expression patterns in nociceptors with the goal of leveraging this biology toward the development of nociceptor-specific gene therapy vectors that deliver inhibitory chemo/opto-genetic tools selectively to nociceptors.

The candidate should have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree, at least one first-author publication, excellent organizational and communication skills, and rigorous training in one or more of the following areas: molecular biology, single-cell genomics/epigenomics, bioinformatics, in vivo calcium imaging, electrophysiology, mouse tissue and mouse behavioral analysis. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop further mastery and broaden each of these skills within the lab and among our broad collaborative network at Harvard and the greater Boston scientific community.

The Renthal lab is a collaborative, collegial, and well-caffeinated environment located in the heart of the Longwood Medical Area in the new Hale Building for Transformative Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. The department will appoint the successful applicant(s) to the BWH Medical Staff as a Research Fellow and will propose that you be appointed as a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School (HMS); however, final approval of this appointment rests with HMS.
