Postdoc Research Project Democratic Innovations In A Green Transition
Copenhagen University
Description
Postdoc position within the Research Project “Democratic Innovations in a Green Transition” in the Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen.
The Department of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for one 20-month postdoc position within the research project “Democratic Innovations in a Green Transition”. The research project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and the Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen. The successful candidate will start January 1, 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The project “Democratic Innovations in a Green Transition” examines the impact of Denmark's Citizens' Climate Assembly on the Danish political system. The overall research question is: In what way might the assembly strengthen support for green transition policies, and to what extent will it affect existing channels for public debate and democratic decision-making? DIGT aims to answer these questions through a new framework that combines the study of deliberative democracy with affect theory, new materialism, and science and technology studies (STS). The project draws on both qualitative and quantitative methods, and it is organized around three subprojects, which together will allow the project to assess how Denmark's Citizen Climate Assembly could, and can be expected to, contribute positively to a national green transition.
The postdoc position
The postdoc position is part of a subproject that compares the climate assembly with other civil society initiatives, with a special emphasis on whether or not the assembly co-opts or even crowds out other efforts against climate change. The postdoc project can make use of digital or qualitative/ethnographic methods and interviews to map how the climate assembly interacts with similar modes of democratic participation. The subproject will also examine whether civil society organizations perceive the assembly as a welcome opportunity to have other voices heard at a formal political level, or whether it is viewed as an inefficient and potentially exclusionary institution that crowds out radical climate action.
Are you the right candidate? Preferred applicants will have an interest in questions related to democratic theory, climate change, and citizenship. We are looking for candidates with completed Ph.D. in political science and with strong analytical skills and proven methodological qualifications. Familiarity with the Danish climate citizens' assembly and its place in Danish civil society is an advantage. The successful candidate must have strong Danish language skills. Please contact project-PI and Professor with special responsibilities, Lars Tønder (lt@ifs.ku.dk) for a full description of the research project and more information about the position.
