Postdoctoral Fellowship in islet biology, transplant immunology, type 1 diabetes, or chronic pancreatitis

JOB DESCRIPTION:

A postdoctoral research fellow position is available in the Wang lab at the Department of Surgery, Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). This position will involve studying cellular therapy and its mechanistic insights in the treatment of type 1 diabetes or chronic pancreatitis with or without islet transplantation using state-of-the-art technologies. Ongoing projects in the Wang lab are focused on translational research using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) to impact autoimmune responses and islet death. Other areas that can be pursued include studying pancreatic beta-cell development and treatment with engineered MSCs, MSC-secreted exosomes, or iPSCs-derived islet cells in animal models and in clinical trials.

Candidates will receive advanced training from the investigational team to enhance their professional skills. Duties include, but are not limited to, assisting in the design and research conduct of their project, developing new ideas that promote current research and preparing and publishing scientific manuscripts. Fellows will be heavily involved in the ongoing clinical trials using cellular therapy in patients with type 1 diabetes or chronic pancreatitis.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D. or M.D.) is needed in appropriate fields. Candidates should have a strong passion for research and the ability to work both independently and as team players. Ability to work with mice is required. Experience with basic molecular biology techniques (i.e., cell culture, protein and RNA analysis, animal handling/surgical techniques), immunology, and neuroscience are preferred but are not required.
