Position Title: Post-Doctoral Fellow - Mining Engineering

Pay Range:

Mines is offering an academic year salary of $50,000 - $63,000

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate's education, training and experience as well as the position's scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.

The Opportunity:

A new initiative on critical minerals at the Colorado School of Mines announces an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in applied social science. Applicants must have a PhD in geography, anthropology, sociology, Indigenous studies, environmental studies, or a related discipline in the social sciences at the time of appointment. The postdoc will join an interdisciplinary research group focused on the interactions among society, the environment, technology, and policy. In particular, the postdoc will focus on the environmental, social, and economic justice issues that relate to producing critical elements in the United States.

The postdoc, under the supervision of Dr. Nicole Smith, will be based at the Colorado School of Mines and participate in a project funded by the National Science Foundation titled, “Responsible Critical Elements: Transforming Earth Resource Development for a Carbon-Neutral Future”. The postdoc will be involved with social science data collection and analyses and will have opportunities to collaborate with faculty, other postdocs, and students in various degree programs and departments at the Colorado School of Mines and Fort Lewis College on “convergent” research examining the potential for ecologically and socially just critical mineral development in the United States and stakeholder views of different development scenarios. The postdoc is expected to contribute intellectually to this project, as well as to advance their own research interests in collaboration with the others on the project. Primary responsibilities include quantitative and/or qualitative data collection, data analysis, recruiting and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, writing peer-reviewed articles, developing grant proposals, coordinating workshops, and helping to manage the research agenda. Creation and dissemination of communication and outreach materials for stakeholders is also expected.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Geography, Anthropology, Sociology, Indigenous Studies, environmental studies or other relevant discipline

Related emphases in tribal policy, economics, business, critical minerals, mineral policy, mineral and energy sovereignty, environmental justice, and/or sustainable development

Ability to quantify the impacts of critical minerals production through the perspectives of diverse stakeholders, with the aim of identifying more equitable approaches that contribute to just transitions and energy sovereignty on tribal lands.

Strong quantitative and qualitative research design, data collection, and data analysis skills (quantitative to include statistical analyses and analytical hierarchy process methods).

Record of or demonstrated potential for writing peer-reviewed papers and grant proposals

Will support and encourage a diverse and inclusive research and learning environment

Can contribute to a team-oriented, collegial work environment

Preferred Qualifications:

Interest and/or experience collaborating with engineering and/or natural science researchers

Interest and/or experience in working with diverse stakeholders (e.g., community members, policy and regulatory bodies, NGOs, academics etc.) including science communication with these groups
